There are various ways to get to Machu Picchu but we chose to join a 4-day hiking tour with Llama Path. It was very physical, especially as the hiking was at elevation (the highest point we passed through was Salkantay Pass at around 4000m) but our gear, a meal tent, toilets and tents to sleep in, were transported by donkeys and everything set up ready for us at the end of each day. It was a truly spectacular experience.

The first photo is of us towards the top of Huayna Picchu, the mountain overlooking Machu Picchu (right hand side of second photo). Machu Picchu, located in Peru, South America, was a fortress built by the Inca civilization between 1450 and 1460. How they managed to construct a fortress at an elevation of 2430m is a mystery. Visiting this special place was firmly on our bucket list and it definitely didn’t disappoint. And while it does attract a lot of tourists, the site is so large, it’s far from crowded.
